Richard III
Hudson Shakespeare
Company
By William Shakespeare
Directed by Michael Hagins
Fight Choreography by Michael Hagins
The fourth offering of the 2005 summer season brought us back to one our of more requested and popular titles, Richard III. Next to Hamlet and Romeo and Juliet, this history play is often the most performed and often darkly with current day political overtones. Our version was presented in a rather radical interpretation of just what Shakespeare added to his text and stressing the play's inherent humor. Richard and several other characters are engaging, amusing and charaismatic which takes the audience beyond it's confined English history setting. Presented in a representational medieval setting, the story follows the peaceful aftermath of the final "Wars of the Roses" between two royal families, the Yorks and the Lancasters. vying for the English throne. Richard, not liking these peaceful and boring times, sets out to kill his own family and others to take and keep the throne for himself while adding the occasional wise crack observation and wink at the audience.
